Transition Kings Cliffe

What is the Transition Movement?

A Transition Initiative (which could be a town, village, university or island etc.) is a community-led response to the pressures of climate change, fossil fuel depletion (resulting in ever rising fuel prices) and increasingly, economic decline.

TKC is Now Officially Part of the Global Transition Network!

This is a great landmark and gives us access to a wealth of information, advice, and like-minded people. Check out the Transition KC page at the Transition NetworkOpens in New Window site.

Our Concerns

A collection of motivated individuals within Kings Cliffe have come together with a shared concern about several crucial points:

  • Disconnection from our natural living environment and our communities.
  • Our energy-intensive ways of living have depleted resources to critical levels. We need to use the same creativity, ingenuity, and adaptability that created this situation to reverse it.
  • The time to act is now. Government and big business are reacting too slowly to the ecological and social challenges that face us.
  • If we collectively plan and act early enough there's every likelihood that we can create a way of living that's significantly more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our natural environment than the oil-addicted treadmill that we find ourselves on today.

Transition Kings Cliffe (TKC) began as a small group that adopted the Transition ModelOpens in New Window with the intention of engaging the people in our community to kick off a Transition Initiative. We believe in the concept of thinking globally, acting locally. To date we have launched several activites:

Transition Kings Cliffe

Transport Group: Urging people to use their legs/bikes more, and share vehicles where possible. This group is already very active on the cycling front, with regular free bike maintenance workshops, bike spares and reconditioned bikes available, bike ride leaflets, and initiatives to improve cycle routes.

Toolshare: A village-wide tool kit, to increase sharing and self-reliance in the village (and save money, always a good bonus!).

Freecycle: Connecting people who want to get rid of items with people who have a use for them.

Food Group: Promotion of localised food production and minimisation of waste. There is a seasonal surplus food table in the Post Office and our Orchard Group are busy working with Kings Cliffe Endowed School to utilise some of their land to plant fruit trees for the school’s use, and as an exercise for pupils in learning about local food production and growing skills.

Youth Group: Calling all youngsters... fed up with toys and games that you have grown out of? Parents not sure what to do with old books and game clutter...then Transition King’s Cliffe has the answer.
